3 Vegan Recipes with BBQ Sauce

Let's waste no time and get right into the BBQ!

Backyard BBQ Burgers

These burgers bring summertime flavors all year round. You can choose your plant based meat base of choice but I would suggest Beyond Meat!

Ingredients:

1 package of plant-based ground beef

2 tablespoons of liquid smoke

¼ cup of vegan Worcestershire sauce

¼ cup of BBQ sauce

½ teaspoon of each of the following

- Onion powder

- Garlic powder

- Chili powder

- Italian seasoning blend mix

- Paprika

- Salt

- Black pepper

¼ cup of vegan mayo*

¼ of aquafaba * (optional)

Oil for cooking

Fixin’s: buns, lettuce, tomatoes, vegan cheese, vegan mayo, anything you love!

Method:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl to blend all flavors together.

  2. Re-shape into the patty size you desire

  3. On a medium heat, cook each patty in light oil for 5-7 minutes on each side (or until brown and crisp to your liking).

  4. Assemble your masterpiece

  5. Eat!

Tip:

  1. If you want your vegan cheese to melt on the patties, once the patty is fully cooked, lay cheese on top and then pour a little water around the patty in the hot pan. It’ll react with the oil and heat to create bubbles and steam that’ll melt the cheese quickly! (Be sure to have that fan on to avoid the fire alarm setting off!)

  2. *You can add vegan mayo and/or aquafaba to your patties to hold them together better! They act as binders like an egg would.

Honee BBQ Nuggets

I have an on-going debate with people about boneless wings really just being nuggets haha! Nonetheless, if you don’t mind honey, be my guest and use it. I personally don’t like the taste hence the substitution.

Ingredients:

Nuggets:

1 can of cannellini (white) beans

½ cup of flour

¼ cup of bread crumbs

1 teaspoon of each (or however much you want)

- Salt

- Pepper

- Paprika

Oil for frying

Honee BBQ Sauce:

½ cup of BBQ sauce

¼ cup of agave nectar (or honey but think about the beeeeees)

Method:

  1. Drain and rinse the beans from the can

  2. In a food processor or blender, blend beans until a nice smooth-ish texture

  3. Transfer bean blend into a bowl with the flour, bread crumbs and seasonings. Get those hands dirty and combine all the ingredients until well incorporated. Then shape into nuggets.*

  4. Prepare fryer or pot of oil to be hot.

  5. Deep fry nuggets for about 5 minutes, they will be easy to see the brown color.

  6. Combine sauce ingredients in a container

  7. Once nuggets are fried, transfer them into your container of sauce and coat evenly*

  8. Enjoy with from fries and dipped in vegan ranch!

*Tips:

1. If the nuggets aren’t forming easily, add some water if too crumbly, add more flour if too sticky.

2. I like putting the nuggets into the container of sauce, closing it, then shaking them up for speed.

Pulled BBQ Sandwich

This is a crowd pleaser with those who love pork and those who need an easy intro to liking mushrooms more. The coleslaw is a bonus that’s highly recommended.

Ingredients:

Marinade:

1 tablespoon of liquid smoke

¼ cup of coconut liquid aminos or soy sauce

1 teaspoon of each:

o Salt, pepper, paprika

A couple tablespoons of oil

Choose a Mock Meat:

1 can of young green jackfruit (Trader Joe’s sells this in a can)

2 cups of shredded or sliced mushrooms of choice (I suggested shiitake or oyster)

1 package of seitan

BBQ Sauce

Oil

Cole Slaw:

2 cups of shredded cabbage and carrots mix

½ cup of vegan mayo

Lemon juice

Salt and Pepper

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients of the marinade in a bowl

  2. Let mock meat marinate for at least 30 minutes

  3. Spread marinate mock meat on a baking sheet and broil on High for 10 minutes.*

  4. Transfer mock meat into a pan on low-medium heat with enough oil to coat the pan and with as much BBQ sauce you want.

  5. Stir the BBQ for about 5 minutes to allow the BBQ sauce to caramelize and adhere to the mock meat.

  6. Combine all coleslaw ingredients in a bowl. Depending on how you like your slaw will determine how much salt and pepper you add.

  7. Build your BBQ sandwich with some toasted buns, BBQ and top it off with the slaw for that good southern feeling!

*Tip: each mock meat acts differently when being broiled so definitely watch it!
